How to Transfer a License to a New Computer

Learn how to deactivate your Windows or Office license on one computer and transfer it to another.

Can I Transfer My License?

Retail licenses (the type we sell) can be transferred to a new computer. You need to deactivate the license on the old computer first, then activate it on the new one.

OEM licenses are tied to the original hardware and cannot be transferred. All licenses purchased from our store are retail licenses unless otherwise specified.

Transferring a Windows License

Step 1: Deactivate on the Old Computer

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator on the old computer.
  2. Type: slmgr /upk and press Enter. This uninstalls the product key from Windows.
  3. Type: slmgr /cpky and press Enter. This clears the product key from the registry.
  4. You should see confirmation dialogs for both commands.

Step 2: Activate on the New Computer

  1. Install Windows on the new computer (see our USB installation guide).
  2. Go to Settings → System → Activation.
  3. Click "Change product key" and enter your key.
  4. Click Activate.

Transferring a Microsoft Office License

For Account-Bound Licenses (Office 2021/2024)

  1. On the old computer, uninstall Office via Settings → Apps.
  2. On the new computer, go to office.com/myaccount.
  3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account you used to activate the key.
  4. Click Install Office and follow the download instructions.
  5. Office will activate automatically since it's tied to your Microsoft account.

For Key-Based Activation

  1. Uninstall Office from the old computer.
  2. Install Office on the new computer.
  3. Enter the same product key when prompted.
  4. If online activation fails (because the key was used before), use phone activation: the automated system will verify and activate your license.

Troubleshooting Transfer Issues

  • "Maximum activations reached" — Make sure you deactivated on the old computer first. If you can't access the old computer, contact our support team with your order number and we'll help resolve it.
  • "Key already in use" — Wait 24-72 hours after deactivating on the old computer for Microsoft's servers to update, then try again.
  • Lost your product key? — Check your email for the original order confirmation. You can also find it in your account dashboard under "Orders".
